This industry talk will begin by describing where we were back in 2017, how we came to find out about Fusion 360 software, and the decision-making process we went through when converting to using Fusion 360. In 2017, our students were stuck to a desk in our “CAD suite” using a competitor product, “collaborating” with USB sticks, and finding creative ways to get around the limitations with “locked down” educational software. The talk will present some case studies detailing the impact Fusion 360 has had on certain workflows and teaching methodologies, as well as some fundamental details of how we deployed the software successfully and are now able to teach more than 300 novice engineers a year how to use the software. During each year that we have subsequently used Fusion 360, we have been able to refine our approach to teaching and using the software on a daily basis, and during the talk we will share some of the best practices and teaching materials we have created.

The Content Center is an invaluable Inventor tool primarily used to store standard components and drive design accelerators, such as Frame Generator, Tube and Pipe, and Bolted Connections. Due to the Content Center database structure, there are several advantages for product design and data manipulation. One advantage is to replace large iPart tables with Content Center families. Simply publishing these large families to a custom Content Center Library will greatly reduce the amount of time required to place and modify these components versus placing them via the iPart table. We’ll also explore customization techniques offered in the Family table, but particularly via the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet linking. Editing Family tables within Excel unleashes all the power the spreadsheet tools have to offer, simplifying data coordination. Finally, we’ll use iLogic to extend the data within the Family table to solve the vexing problem of automatically establishing part numbers for Tube and Pipe Conduit parts.

For infrastructure managers, up-to-date asset data is crucial to meet the expectations for qualitative and safe roads. Using BIM (Building Information Modeling) helps us build our infrastructure more efficiently and collect the asset data we need. As the “information management” aspect is essential for an efficient asset management, our vision leads the way on how we can evolve toward a more data-driven organization, how we can implement BIM, and what we consider to be our role as a contracting authority in standardizing the BIM implementation. By providing a standardized Object Type Library (OTL) and uniform BIM specifications in our contracts, we encourage all stakeholders to start implementing BIM. Moreover, a general BIM protocol and uniform BIM execution plan for every project help us standardize the level playing field in our BIM projects. Different software packages and tools such as Civil 3D software, Revit software, Navisworks software, and BIM 360 software help us deliver and verify intelligent models following our specifications.

You’ve been given the responsibility to manage CAD within your department and/or organization, but your job title does not include “CAD manager.” You do not or cannot dedicate all of your time to this task. So how do you do this? We’ll use my transition from reseller to mining equipment manufacturer as a way of examining how to get buy-in from management, how to get participation by the users (and your peers), where to start, and how to proceed, as well as reviewing my continuing development with time and project management. Let’s talk processes, procedures, training, CAD, management, and continual leadership.

In the United States, the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry has historically had issues with diversity in every sense of the word. Why is this? What can be done to be more inclusive and welcoming to all people? In this roundtable, we will build upon topics discussed in last year’s Women in BIM panel, continuing to identify some root causes of this disparity and discuss strategies that we can all use to both advocate for ourselves and others. Discussion topics may include: What groups are historically underrepresented in the AEC industry and why? What strategies have worked for you to get you where you are? Have others helped you get where you are? If so, in what ways? What are ways to get out of our comfort zones? Where can we find support in our communities? What strategies can we start employing NOW to be more inclusive in our hiring practices and to shift our collective view? How can we actively encourage and nurture the next generation to pursue careers in the AEC industry? To help prepare for this session, a survey was created and shared online to collect information about current diversity in the AEC Industry. This survey was used to inform the discussion questions.
